Fluoridation:
Introduction to Fluoridation in San Diego County
Our water treatment plants turn "raw water" [untreated/not safe to drink] into safe, healthful drinking water that meets all state and federal requirements. All raw water contains a small amount of fluoride, naturally. Fluoridation is the slight adjustment of that natural fluoride level to one that has been proven to help prevent tooth decay.
The City of Escondido began adjusting the fluoride content of drinking water at their water treatment facility in August 2004. In the Fall of 2007 the Metropolitan Water District [MWD], water wholesaler for all of Southern California, will begin fluoridation of the water they are responsible for treating. At the same time, the Helix Water District will begin fluoridation at its water treatment facility.
The map on this website illustrates all the water districts that are members of the San Diego County Water Authority and their anticipated fluoridation status when fluoride adjustment is accomplished by Escondido, Helix and MWD. Extensive water testing over the first year of community water fluoridation, will provide a more accurate picture of fluoride levels in the areas that will receive a blend of both fluoridated and non-fluoridated water. Those areas receiving optimally fluoridated water [the ideal level for healthy teeth] will have their fluoride level tested and regulated at all times.
Your water bill will indicate the name of your water district and a phone number for you to call for further information about your water's fluoride level now, and in the future. Or you may click on the following link to the San Diego County Water Authority for a list of member water districts and their contact information, including websites. The Authority's own website will have fluoridation information once fluoridation begins. The City of Escondido website is an excellent resource and currently available.
